Chapter Nineteen

Jamie

Last Friday with Liz had been the best night of my life. Over the week, I’d seen her a few times, each of us on our way to or from work. I wanted to pursue something with her, but I wasn’t sure how she’d respond. We were still neighbors, after all.

But damn if I didn’t want more. Way more.

After we’d had sex in my car, I’d kissed her again. I’d wanted to invite her to stay over with me, but when we got out of the car, she kissed me one last time and wished me goodnight.

I didn’t feel rejected, though. There were no regrets on my end, and if I had my way, there’d be no regrets on hers. I was totally smitten with her—the way her mouth quirked up on one side when she smiled, the haunted look in her gray-blue eyes that came over her when she was thinking hard about a response to something I said. Her intelligence, evident in the way she spoke, the way she saw the world around her.

This part of relationships—the early part when every look and touch meant something—I loved this part.

I had to be careful not to scare her off, which was why I’d given her some space all week. We’d exchanged brief greetings, and I could tell she was still interested in the way she looked at me.

As I got ready for a day of shopping for office space in the city, I thought more about Liz. Today was Friday, and tonight, I’d do something special for her. The idea had been forming, and I was so ready. Take-out and champagne.

But not just any take-out. I’d asked her, earlier in the week, what her favorite kind of food was. “It varies,” she’d said. “There’s a great Italian place down the hill. A little hole in the wall, but the ravioli dishes are to die for.”

Italian it would be, then.

I heard the sound of her Mini Cooper driving off. Damn, I’d missed her this morning. I finished shaving, hopped in the shower, and was out in a jiff. Big day in the city.

My morning paper was centered squarely on my welcome mat. The delivery person couldn’t have tossed it more perfectly if they’d tried. I picked it up and set it on the side table near the door to read when I got back from office hunting.
